Cagliari
Cagliari
The capital city of Sardinia is the first point of call for some visitors, and it does have many historic attractions. The old town is squeezed within the Pisan fortifications in a scenic setting which is further enhanced by the beautiful natural lagoons on the western edge of the city. In Cagliari you will see the Cathedral, an impressive Roman amphitheatre, an interesting Archaeological Museum with a collection of nuraghic statues, and the Pisan towers which give excellent views down over the picturesque port.

Nora
Nora
Near Cagliari, the ancient Roman remains of Nora are a must see for any lovers of ancient history. These ancient remains are the most important historic site in Sardinia. Some of Nora now lies beneath the sea, but those parts still on terra firma include a temple, baths with some well-preserved mosaics, and a theatre at which performances are still given over the summer months. Many finds from the remains are now housed at the archaeological museum in nearby Pula.

Oristano
Oristano/ Sinis Peninsula
The town of Oristano's historic core retains a mediaeval feel. It is a charming place of palm tree-dotted elegant squares and narrow lanes. Most people, however, will spare little time for Oristano's elegance and will instead head for the Sinis Peninsula, and the impressive Punic and Roman remains of Tharros. These amazing remnants of past civilizations are not only historically interesting but are situated on a beautiful and wild stretch of coastline.

Bosa
Bosa
This historic small town on the river Temo has a long and varied history and that history is still stamped on this place. It is pleasant to stroll through the pastel coloured houses of the lower town, Sa Piana, viewing the Cathedral before meandering uphill to the Castle through the mediaeval Sa Costa area. This is a pleasant, sleepy place that feels in some ways like it is stuck in time, in a simpler and more peaceful age.

Castelsardo
Castelsardo
The historic centre of this popular holiday resort town also retains a mediaeval atmosphere and also has a central castle. This castle now houses a quaint museum of basketwork. There are also a number of handicraft shops around the town that sell examples of this historic craft. The town's scenic location alone should be enough of an incentive to add it to your itinerary.

Sassari
Sassari
Sassari is Sardinia's second city and a museum here, Museo Sanna, houses many important archaeological finds from around the island. Sassari was the Genoan capital while Caligari was under Pisan control. The historic University here was the first in Sardinia and continues to be a highly respected institution today.

Alghero
Alghero
Though a busy resort, this town is interesting to visit because it retains a strongly Catalan flavour. Its flamboyant old town is a lovely place to watch the sunset.
