Valentine's Day Holidays in Germany

Updated on February 2, 2015

Germany may not always be the first place that springs to mind when you think of locations for a romantic Valentine's Day vacation, but there are indeed many romantic spots within this country, replete with fantasy and magic and beauty. Here are just a few suggestions:

Romantic Road

With such a name as this, it could not fail to be included on any list of romantic German destinations. Though in this case, love is not so much a destination as a journey – a journey down one of the most scenically beautiful routes in the country, a fanciful marketing concoction very loosely based on the old Roman road, detouring to take in some of the most magical mediaeval locations en route, but no less magical for its relative modernity. This route in Southern Germany, Bavaria, takes in the delightful cities of Wutzburg and Augsburg and some delightful walled towns including Rothenberg ob der Tauber and Nordlingen before throwing into your faces the fairytale delights of Neuschwanstein Castle and the stunning scenery of the Alps. Like many a fairytale, it is almost too good to be true.

Heidelberg

Looking over at the red-hued castle from the Philosopher's Way you may be breathless, and not just because you have just climbed all the winding steps from the old town. Take a stroll looking down over the old buildings, University and churches, before descending to explore perfect cobbled alleyways and supping beer at a table in one of the old squares. Explore the castle, and learn more about the history of this pleasant and friendly University town, which has been home to so many great thinkers over the last couple of centuries.

Baden Baden

The old town and spas of Baden Baden could be just the place to find blissful relaxation with your loved one this February. Explore the exquisite historical areas, including the ruins of the Roman baths. Drink the fresh mineral water at the Trinkhalle, and perhaps you could also treat yourself and your loved one to some luxurious modern spa treatments? The perfect place to come if you desperately need to relax and want to remove the weight of the world from your shoulders.

Moselle Valley

Explore the Moselle valley by boat or car and you will be treated to a succession of picturesque riverside villages, historic castles perched precariously on hill tops, and pleasing vineyard views. Stop in the pretty town of Cochem, with its mediaeval old town with half-timbered houses and winding lanes, or visit Bernkastel-Kues for wine tasting and charm galore. Be sure not to miss the Vinothek, where 160 different wines await your delectation.

Idar-Oberstein

This small but perfectly formed jewel of a town in a gemstone capital of the country, surrounded by gemstone mines in the Steinkaulenberg – the only gemstone mines in Europe that can be visited. Could this tiny fairytale place, nestled under its castle, be the perfect place to give a big old rock to your loved one, and pop the question this Valentine's Day?
